Love Your Neighbor Day - Saturday, January 10th

We invite you to take time on Saturday, January 10th, to show the love of Christ to your neighbor.

The TOP 5 Ways to Love Your Neighbor:

1. Just be there. “We all have times when we could just use a friend during some sort of trial or hardship, and often those are the times when we find out who really cares about us and who considers us a priority. Love [a neighbor] by being there when they need you.”

2. Give. “A lot of times when someone is in need we tend to want to run and hide, because to help might mean we have to give of something that's ours. You ever hear of someone's desperate financial need right when you just got some extra cash you weren't expecting? Yeah, you were all excited about getting to blow some money on something you don't even need, but now you face a choice: to love or not to love. Remember, 1 Corinthians 13 says love is not selfish.”

3. Ease their load. “We all get overwhelmed at times in life with our responsibilities and work load. Maybe to show love to your neighbor you could offer to take some of their load, even if just for a little while, to give them a breather.”

4. Think practical. “Fifteen inches of snow just fell. You've got a snow blower, your neighbor doesn't. Need I say more?”

5. Keep an open heart. “We may not always agree with someone's lifestyle, but that doesn't mean we have the right to treat them with less respect than someone whose lifestyle is similar to our own. In other words, show them love by not being a snob!”

--written by Joanne Brokaw

Our plan for "Love Your Neighbor Day":

My neighbor is confined to a wheelchair and is barely able to leave her home. We are taking breakfast to our neighbor and will spend time connecting with her by learning more about her and her family.

If you have an idea that you would like to share, email Christie.

We will show pictures on this site of those "loving their neighbors" after January 10th. Send your pictures to Christie also, and they will be posted here.

“I want you to be concerned about your next door neighbor.
Do you know your next door neighbor?”

February 1, 2009 - Souper Bowl Sunday - Day of Caring

America's teens are transforming Super Bowl weekend into the nation's largest youth-led weekend of giving and serving through the Souper Bowl of Caring.

Last year, youth across the nation raised over $10 million for charities through participating in Souper Bowl of Caring.

I am writing to encourage you to get involved with this simple movement of God’s love in 2009.

On Souper Bowl Sunday, February 1, 2009 youth will collect one-dollar donations.

Each group will donate their money directly to the charity of their choice—no money is sent to Souper Bowl of Caring headquarters.

Organizers simply ask that groups report their collection amount so a national total can be determined.

It’s this easy!
• Register at www.souperbowl.org or call 1-800-358-SOUP (7687) to receive your free promotional materials.
• Collect donations on or near Super Bowl Sunday.
• Report your results at http://www.souperbowl.org for the country to see the power of caring.
• Donate 100% of your collection to the charity of your choice. In addition, if you would like to add a hands-on component to this event, your group can participate in the Service Blitz by getting out and serving at a local charity.

To learn more about Souper Bowl of Caring, visit http://www.souperbowl.org or
call 800-358-7687. America’s youth are working to make 2009 a record year for the Souper Bowl of Caring, by raising millions for hunger and poverty-related charities across the country. I hope you will choose to get involved in this grassroots, youth movement that is truly helping to serve “the least of these.”

Penny Campaign - (one of) December's Serving Our Generation Events

The Penny Campaign at Samaritan Ministries

Many people consider the penny an insignificant amount with no buying power.

In 1992, Samaritan unleashed the power of the penny with its first Penny Campaign. This effort for increasing awareness of hunger and homelessness in our backyard while raising money for Samaritan has become a community event.

The annual Penny Campaign is Samaritan’s major fundraiser. Beginning October 1st and continuing through November, schools, churches, families, individuals, civic organizations and corporations across the Triad, all join in saving their pennies and spare change for the Samaritan Soup Kitchen and Inn.

The Penny Campaign collection day is held the first Saturday in December. All unrolled collected coins are dropped off at the Thruway Center in Winston-Salem. It’s a fun filled day with WXII’s Cameron Kent and the Samaritan team. Jar stickers, posters and other marketing materials are available.

Heavenview's choir plans to sing at the Penny Campaign! Come out, bring your pennies and enjoy the music!

October's Ronald McDonald House Newsletter

Hi Ronald McDonald House Supporters!

Happy Fall to you all! During this beautiful time of year, I hope you have a chance to go to the fair, cheer on a football game, take in the pretty scenery and enjoy upcoming Halloween celebrations.

This month our top needs are:

1 – Single serving sweet snacks (ex. Little Debbie cakes, cookies, etc.)

2 – Items for breakfast (pop tarts, cereal bars, etc.)

3 – Coffee creamer – we are out!

4 – Windex glass cleaner

5 – Single serving chips

Light a Luminary Project 2008

The Ronald McDonald House and luminaries have been synonymous in Winston-Salem for the past 22 years. In 2007, despite the enforcement of a statewide burning ban, more than 12,500 luminary kits at $5.00 each were sold. Luminary kits contain six bags, six candles, and a bag of sand. Luminaries are placed on the curbs in neighborhoods and are lit on December 24th in honor of families who stay at the Ronald McDonald House.

Each year, volunteers help us assemble the luminary kits. We have opportunities for adults only (21 and up) to help with the project this year on Tuesday, November 18th, Wednesday November 19th and Thursday November 20th. For those three days, school groups are scheduled to help assemble. Adults are needed as helpers/group leaders with the school groups those three days from 9:00am to 2:00pm at the Habitat for Humanity Warehouse (339 Witt Street, Winston-Salem). No sign up is required, you are welcome to stop by and help, for a lunch break or more!

Holidays at the Ronald McDonald House

It is now October and time for us to begin planning the holidays. If you would like to spend some time with our House guests we would love to have help from you and your family. Over the holidays, volunteers help by collecting items for general family gifts (our wish list is attached), adopting families and helping in the office. The office will be closed on major holidays, but we always need someone in the House in case of emergencies. Last year, volunteers who helped cover the office spent time visiting with families, sorting donations and tidying in the kitchen. Open shifts at the House are on the following days:

November 27 (Thanksgiving)

December 13, 14, 20, 21, 24, 25

January 1

Those who have volunteered on past holidays guarantee that is a very rewarding experience. Please let us know if you have any questions, or would like to get involved with our holiday opportunities!

The Cake and Pie Auction was a HUGE SUCCESS!

Our congregation did a wonderful job putting their confectionery skills to work.

We had a wide variety of sweets to offer: 4-layer Pumpkin Cake w/ Pumpkin Cheesecake Mousse filling, the Zappalas Famous 5-Flavor Pound Cake (2 of them - each sold for $120), Pecan Pie, Key Lime Cake, Tropical Cheesecake with Coconut Crust, Butterfinger Toffee Cake, etc...

It was a lot of fun with several bidding wars (I think Bro. Herman won the war on two cakes and Sis. Peggy is still trying to figure out how he missed her cut off signals).

Our people really got into the whole spirit of it and in just a short time of about 45 minutes we had raised $2500.

We are so thankful for all those who baked and for all of those who purchased pies/cakes for such a worthy cause.

The funds collected through this fundraising endeavor will help missionairies across the globe!

Support Ronald McDonald house by shopping at Macy's

Support the Ronald McDonald House by shopping at Macy’s!

Selected organizations (RMH is a selected organization!) have been invited to sell $5.00 Shop For A Cause passes on Saturday, September 20th. These passes allow shoppers to receive discounted purchases.

100% of every pass sold by a RMH volunteer goes to RMH!

We need volunteers to help! Volunteers must be at least 18 or have their legal guardian work with them. Last year it was a lot of fun – talking with shoppers and telling them about the Ronald McDonald House. We expect to have inflatable Ronald at our table, along with information about the House.

Ideally, we need three people per shift and the shifts are below:

10:00 am – 12:00 noon
12:00 noon – 2:00 pm
2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Please respond to Mindy Bloom, at the House {(336) 723-0228 x19; mindyb@rmhwinstonsalem.org} with your email address, shift preference, and cell number if you are interested. Mindy will confirm your shift via email.

Thanks so much for your support!

September's Serving Our Generation Efforts

Recently we had a Serving Our Generation event that was a little more intimate than some of our larger community efforts. A family in our community has not been able to make it to church because of medical situations, so we took the church to them.

Here's what happened: We believe that God honored our efforts by showing up. His presence was so sweet and refreshing to all of us.

They had been feeling down and not as close to God as they had felt in the past. They told us that they were encouraged by our visit and really appreciated us giving of our time to be with them.

We truly CAN make a difference in our community.

October's Serving Our Generation Event will be a Yard Sale at the Community Center, 1400 West Clemmonsville Road in Winston-Salem. If you have items that you would like to bring or if you are interested in helping on Saturday, October 4th, please contact me.

The Children's Home

Thanks to all who served on Saturday at The Children's Home!

The following was written by one of the students who participated on Saturday, from HeavenView:

"This experience was heartbreaking and joyful all at once. To think that these children have no parents in their lives was so sad, but yet they were filled with such a joy. It was so uplifting and so humbling to be with them, we had an awesome time. I would love to go back and do it all again. The children made a great impression on my life; to think that I personally take many things for granted when they live life day to day with hardly anything. I wish everyone could have been there, because it was a life changing experience for me."
To sign up for October's Serving Our Generation Event, email Christie.
