We Had A Great Turnout At The Ronald McDonald House!

Beverley's chili was all the guests talked about on Tuesday night. Thank you, Sis. Beverley for providing this yummy dinner for the guests of RMH. You are such a blessing to Heavenview and to our community.

Thanks to Ashley, Alicea, Kim, Sharon, Peggy, Donna, Antoinette, Matthew, Beverley and Jamie for making the evening a perfect one.

The meal you made and the hugs and words of encouragement you offered the guests that evening genuinely touched their heart.

Watching tears well up in their eyes as you believed with them that God is able to accomplish exactly what their child needs, was overwhelming.

This is what we are called to do. Serving Our Generation by the Will of God is what our community needs from us. Showing the Love of Jesus Christ is invaluable. I learned this lesson once more this past Tuesday evening, thanks to you.

Serving at Samaritan Ministries

Beverley agreed to sleep overnight at the homeless shelter through our Serving Our Generation Campaign - and this is what she shared with me about her experience: Thank you Christie. Going to the Homeless shelter was a greatly rewarding experience for me. Seeing the needs of the guest, talking with them, the devotion, listening to them express their thanks and gratitude... I am going to try and do it about once or every two months if my work schedule permits me.

Thanks to all of our volunteers! You make a difference each time you look outside of your own needs to meet the needs of others.

Main Street Academy Appreciation Dinner

We were delighted to serve the faculty, staff and volunteers of Main Street Academy recently.

With nearly forty individuals in attendance, we shared encouragement and support of those who work tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of students.

Main Street Academy is an alternative high school in Winston-Salem.

We have partnered with them for nearly four years and are so blessed by our partnership.

Providing A Meal

Over the last three weekends we were able to serve nearly 250 meals to our homeless brothers and sisters in Winston-Salem.

"Love Your Neighbor Day" is this SATURDAY!

We invite you to take time on Saturday, February 11th, to show the love of Christ to your neighbor.

The TOP 5 Ways to Love Your Neighbor:

1. Just be there. “We all have times when we could just use a friend during some sort of trial or hardship, and often those are the times when we find out who really cares about us and who considers us a priority. Love [a neighbor] by being there when they need you.”

2. Give. “A lot of times when someone is in need we tend to want to run and hide, because to help might mean we have to give of something that's ours. You ever hear of someone's desperate financial need right when you just got some extra cash you weren't expecting? Yeah, you were all excited about getting to blow some money on something you don't even need, but now you face a choice: to love or not to love. Remember, 1 Corinthians 13 says love is not selfish.”

3. Ease their load. “We all get overwhelmed at times in life with our responsibilities and work load. Maybe to show love to your neighbor you could offer to take some of their load, even if just for a little while, to give them a breather.”

4. Think practical. “Fifteen inches of snow just fell. You've got a snow blower, your neighbor doesn't. Need I say more?”

5. Keep an open heart. “We may not always agree with someone's lifestyle, but that doesn't mean we have the right to treat them with less respect than someone whose lifestyle is similar to our own. In other words, show them love by not being a snob!”

Souper Bowl Sunday is February 5th!

Be sure to take advantage of giving SOMETHING at Heavenview this Sunday as service closes to help Samaritan Ministries through our Souper Bowl of Caring fundraiser.

Souper Bowl of Caring is a campaign to help organizations in need of financial support. We want them to continue to do the good they do in our community.

Be a part of this effort. Give back.

What started as a grassroots effort in South Carolina calling attention to hunger has grown into a national fundraising event with over $40 million raised since 1990.

The Souper Bowl of Caring takes place on the NFL’s Super Bowl Sunday, when millions of dollars are spent on food served on game day. Church youth groups wearing their favorite NFL team jerseys and carrying soup pots, collect $1 from people as they leave their worship service. All proceeds collected remain in the community benefiting hungry and homeless people.

Church youth groups can show your support to end hunger by participating on February 5, 2012 in Souper Bowl Sunday and donating the monies raised to the Samaritan Soup Kitchen and Inn.

For additional information, visit www.souperbowl.org.

Love Your Neighbor Day 2012 is right around the corner!

That's right! Saturday, February 11th is Love Your Neighbor Day. This day is all about showing the love of Jesus Christ in a practical way to your neighbor, or anyone that could benefit from receiving love. I guess, really, that's all of us.

Now that you know WHO you want to show love to on Saturday, February 11th - let me help you with some ideas for HOW you can show love in a meaningful way.

Ideas for showing love to your neighbor:

  • Cook a meal
  • Write a thoughtful note
  • Invite them over for dinner
  • Eat out together (be sure to pay for their meal)
  • Offer to help them conquer a project they've been putting off around the house
  • Ask for prayer requests, or if they would like to pray with you
  • Make something homemade to give to them
  • If they have kids offer them free childcare so they can have a date night
  • If you're someone who can fix things, offer to fix something that is broken
  • Pay for the meal of the person behind you in the drive-through
  • Volunteer at a soup kitchen
  • Offer to help someone with their homework
  • Visit the residents in a nursing home, don't forget to bring snacks!
  • Take cookies or danishes to the local hospice
  • Take a ton of balloons to the Children's Hospital
A story to share from our past Love Your Neighbor Days:

Our family made cookies for our neighbors. We connected with three families. We told them we hoped they were having a good New Year. On the plate we wrote that we were praying for them.

This was something that we needed to do. We were glad to do this - to show the Love of God in a dark and busy world!

Love,
The Lee Family

More to come!
